Installing an exchange app in Kenya: how to tell the real one from a copy
In Kenya, as elsewhere, links circulate promising the app of an exchange with special features or a bonus for installing it from that link. Most are copies built to steal passwords and verification codes. Protection is simple but demands discipline: install only from the official store on your phone, check the listing before downloading and secure the account before moving money. This guide applies that method to Binance, OKX, Bybit and Bitget, and it adds a few habits that suit people who manage much of their money from a phone.
Search the official store yourself
Open the official app store on your phone and type the name of the exchange. Do not use links received through WhatsApp, Telegram, email or adverts, even when a friend forwards them. If you prefer to start from the web, open the exchange website from a bookmark you saved yourself and follow the official help centre to reach the store listing.
Check the listing before installing
Compare the developer name with the one given in the official help centre. Look at the reviews, the update history and whether the description reads naturally. Copies often have a nearly identical name, few genuine reviews and a recent publication date. If two similar apps appear, install neither until you are sure which one is legitimate.
Warning signs after opening it
A legitimate app will never ask for a wallet recovery phrase, never ask you to install remote-control software and never ask for codes through a chat. If the first screen pushes instant prizes or a rushed verification, close and delete it. Sign in only when you are sure the app is the official one, and use a trusted network rather than public wireless.
Secure the account before depositing
Turn on two-step verification with an authenticator app or a passkey, set the anti-phishing code if one exists and enable the withdrawal address whitelist. Menu names change between versions, so search the official help centre if you cannot find an option. Only then make a small first deposit. Treat any call or message about your account that you did not start with the same suspicion you would give a request to approve a payment you did not initiate.
Risk boundary: Kenya Crypto Guide
Digital assets are volatile and derivatives can amplify losses. This website has no login, wallet connection, deposit form or customer-support chat. A referral link only records attribution; it does not guarantee access, pricing, rewards, approval or investment results. Availability can differ by residence, legal entity and product, so no regional access is assumed from language or branding alone.
Scenario checkpoint
- Search for the app by typing its name in the official store
- Compare the developer name with the official help centre
- Delete any app that asks for a recovery phrase or remote access
- Enable two-step verification before the first deposit
- Never install from links received in messages or adverts
