Splitting crypto between the OKX funding account, trading account and your own wallet
A simple custody plan for OKX users: what each OKX account type is for, how to move funds between them, how much to leave on the exchange and how to move the rest to a wallet you control.
Multiple exchanges | Kenya | KES | fees, access and account safety
Custody is a fancy word for a simple question: who holds the keys to your coins? On OKX, the exchange holds them and you hold login credentials. In your own wallet, you hold the keys and nobody can reset them for you. Neither is perfect. A sensible plan uses both: keep what you are actively trading on OKX, keep long-term holdings in self-custody, and make the boundary between them a deliberate decision rather than an accident.
Know the OKX account types
In the OKX app, open Assets. You will see a funding account, where deposits usually land and where P2P and some earn products draw from, and a trading account, used for spot and derivatives orders. Moving between them is an internal transfer, done with the Transfer button, and does not touch the blockchain. Keeping idle funds in the funding account means a mistaken or compromised trade order cannot use them directly.
Decide what stays on the exchange
Write down an amount you are comfortable leaving on OKX: enough for your trading plans for the next few weeks. Anything above that is a candidate for withdrawal. Review OKX's proof of reserves page from time to time, but do not treat it as a reason to keep more than you need. Your personal limit is the control that you, not the exchange, are responsible for.
Move the rest to a wallet you control
Set up a wallet whose recovery phrase you have written down offline, never photographed. Add its address to the OKX withdrawal address book with a clear label and the correct network. Send a small test first, check the transaction ID in a block explorer, then send the remainder. Repeat the test whenever you use a new address or network.
Review the split every month
Once a month, compare balances against your plan. If the exchange side has crept up, withdraw the excess. If you need funds for trading, deposit them from your wallet rather than leaving a large standing balance. Keep a short log of each move, with dates and transaction IDs, so you can always explain where your coins are.
Common custody mistakes to avoid
The most damaging mistakes are storing the recovery phrase as a phone photo or cloud note, sharing it with someone who offers to help set up the wallet, and sending to a self-custody address on a network the wallet does not support. Another quieter mistake is never testing recovery: once your wallet is set up, restore it on a spare device or in the wallet app's recovery check, so you know the written phrase is correct before you rely on it.

Scenario checkpoint
- Keep idle balances in the OKX funding account rather than the trading account
- Write down a maximum amount to hold on OKX and withdraw anything above it
- Store the self-custody recovery phrase offline and test each new withdrawal address
