Withdrawing to a mobile wallet in Kenya: prove you can restore the wallet before the coins leave the exchange

A self-custody wallet is only as safe as its backup. How to test a recovery phrase restore, match the network and send a first withdrawal from an exchange without risking funds you cannot recover.

Moving coins off an exchange into a wallet on your phone gives you full control, and full responsibility. In Kenya, phones get stolen, dropped in matatus and replaced often, so the real question is not whether you can receive a withdrawal but whether you could get the coins back after losing the phone. The exchange cannot help you there. Before any meaningful amount leaves your account, spend twenty minutes proving that your wallet backup works. The withdrawal itself is the easy part.

Write the recovery phrase on paper and restore it once

When you create the wallet, it shows a recovery phrase of twelve or twenty-four words. Write them on paper in order, never in a screenshot, a WhatsApp chat to yourself or a notes app that syncs to the cloud. Then test the backup: note your receiving address, delete the wallet from the app or install it on a second device, and restore it using only the paper. If the same address appears, the backup works. If anything does not match, start again with a new wallet before funding it.

Choose the network on both sides

In the wallet, open Receive for the coin you want and note which network the address belongs to. On the exchange, open Withdraw, select the same coin and pick the identical network from the list. Many withdrawals fail because USDT is sent on one network while the wallet expects another. Paste the address, check the first and last characters against the wallet, and read the network fee and the amount to be received in the withdrawal form before confirming.

Send a small amount and watch it arrive

For the first transfer, send a small amount. Copy the transaction ID from the exchange's withdrawal history and follow it on the network's block explorer. When it is confirmed, open the wallet and check that the balance appears. If you plan to withdraw regularly, save the address in the exchange's withdrawal address book with a clear label and enable whitelist-only withdrawals, so future transfers go only to addresses you approved.

Store the backup where you and your family can find it

Keep the paper phrase somewhere safe from water and fire, away from the phone, and consider a second copy in another trusted place. Decide whether someone in your family should know where it is, because coins in a wallet nobody can open are lost for good. Do not type the phrase into any website or share it with anyone who claims to be support. No exchange or wallet provider will ever ask for it.
